New Irish TV Station to Create 150 Jobs

A NEW Irish TV channel creating 150 jobs, which will be broadcast here, across Europe and in the US, will be launched by Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

IrishTv is the brainchild of husband and wife team Pierce O’Reilly and Maireach Ni Mhaoilchiarain, and the station will feature 50 home-produced programmes a week.

The couple, backed by Mayo-born multi-millionaire John Griffin, have bought Sky Channel 191, but the programmes will also be available on Freesat, in the US on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and online at IrishTV.ie and IrishTV.com.

Mr Griffin, who recently sold the UK’s largest minicab service, Addison Lee, for €360m, is chair of the new €15m project.

British Sky to create 800 Dublin jobsThe jobs will be created over the next two years at a new Sky customer service centre in Dublin to serve the Irish market, the company said in a statement.

British satelite broadcaster Sky is to create 800 jobs in Ireland, in a boost to a country which has one of the highest unemployment rates in the European Union.

The jobs announcement was one of the biggest by a single company in Ireland since its economic crisis took hold.

Bailed out by the EU/IMF in late 2010 and midway through a punishing eight-year austerity drive,Ireland recorded an unemployment rate last year of 14.2 percent, its highest since 1993 and more than three times the level of 2007.

The jobs will be created over the next two years at a new Sky customer service centre in Dublin to serve the Irish market, the company said in a statement.

Sky, which employs over 18,000 people across the UK and Ireland, plans to create a total of 1,300 new jobs in the UK and Ireland over the next two years, the statement said.

New UTV channel to launch in Ireland in early 2015, creating 100 jobs  Pictured: Michael Wilson and John McCannUTV Media said today that its subsidiary UTV Ireland Limited (UTV) plans to launch a new Irish TV channel at the beginning of 2015, creating more than 100 new jobs.

The new channel will be based in Dublin and will have additional newsgathering and reporting presence in Cork, Galway, Waterford and Limerick.  UTV plans to have this new channel on air in early 2015.

An application for a content provision contract is to be submitted to the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) today.

Today’s announcement follows the signing of an agreement with ITV Studios Global Entertainment that will give UTV the exclusive broadcasting rights for ITV Studios programmes for the Republic of Ireland audience, including soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale, from early 2015, once appropriate statutory broadcasting licences are in place.

“The audience in Ireland has known the UTV brand for more than 50 years through our station for Northern Ireland and we’re delighted to announce our plans for a new dedicated channel for viewers in the Republic of Ireland,” said UTV Media group chief executive John McCann.

“UTV Media already has a very strong presence in the Republic of Ireland employing more than 300 people in our various businesses including our market leading Irish radio stations. We look forward to building on that success with the launch of a new Irish TV channel.”
