Irish join social business competition

IRISH UNIVERSITY students with “a head for business and a heart for the world” are taking part in a global competition for social entrepreneurship for the first time.

Almost 50,000 students from 1,500 universities worldwide are taking part in Students in Free Enterprise (Sife), which involves setting up projects to improve the quality of life and standard of living of people in need.

Previous projects have included training people on low incomes to run childcare services in the US; helping disadvantaged women in Brazil set up a chocolate-making enterprise; promoting a bike shop set up by a mental health group in Germany; and helping establish bee-keeping businesses in Ghana.

Accountancy firm KPMG was instrumental in bringing the initiative to Ireland because of its support for Sife abroad. KPMG managing partner Terence O’Rourke said it was a fantastic opportunity for students to use their talents and skills in a practical way. “It’s about ensuring our next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs act in a more socially aware and responsible way for the benefit of their communities.”

Students from Dublin City University, NUI Galway, Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin are taking part in the competition. The winning team will represent Ireland at the Sife World Cup 2012 in Washington in September. US secretary of state Hillary Clinton will host a reception for the finalists.

Ireland international and Leinster rugby player Leo Cullen is on the board of Sife Ireland.

“Now, more than ever, it’s important that students realise how their skills and abilities can be fulfilled personally to effect positive change for people less well off in our society,” he said.

TCD law student Sarah Oppermann is taking part in the competition. She said her group was working on three ideas involving reducing food waste, putting empty shop space to better use and working with long- term unemployed people. “I think the concept of using business in a socially conscious way is very important, so when I read about Sife I was delighted to get involved.”

Daithí de Buitléir from DCU said his involvement had been “a brilliant experience so far” and he was looking forward to the national competition in May.

Sife Ireland is supported by The Irish Times, Arthur Cox, Chartis, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, The Ireland Funds, KBC Bank, McDonald’s Restaurants of Ireland, Unilever and Senator Feargal Quinn.

A call to action for entrepreneurs

The organisers of the showpiece Entrepreneur of the Year event have launched this year’s programme with a call to action for entrepreneurs to demonstrate their capacity to drive change and support economic recovery.

Ernst & Young partner in charge of the programme, Frank O’Keeffe, said that the current breed of entrepreneurs were “fuelled by an unparalleled level of dedication and commitment” and would “reignite” the nation’s stalled economy.

Nominations for the 2012 programme—the 15th annual event—close next Friday, March 30th, and 24 finalists will be announced in May, with the shortlisted contenders to attend a CEO retreat to Silicon Valley, a golden opportunity for developing skills, business networks and peer relationships.

The overall victor and three category winners (emerging, industry and international) will be announced in October, with the Entrepreneur of the Year representing Ireland at the World Entrepreneur of the Year finals next summer.

The programme also creates an ever-evolving network of finalists, now numbering over 300 entrepreneurs, that fosters collaboration and provides business opportunities.

Leaning Tower of Pisa among global sites set to go green

Leaning Tower of Pisa among global sites set to go green

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the latest global landmarks to reveal that they will be turning green for St Patrick’s Day.

Last month, Tourism Ireland announced that a number of famous attractions and sites around the world will go green on 17 March, including Niagara Falls, the London Eye, Burj al Arab in Dubai and Table Mountain in South Africa.

“More landmarks than ever before will turn green on St Patrick’s Day this year, promoting Ireland to millions of potential visitors around the world,” said Leo Vardkar, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport. “Our job is to build on this fantastic occasion by encouraging them to visit Ireland. We want to give them the green light to visit –literally. Traditionally, St Patrick’s Day has signalled the start of the tourism season in Ireland and this initiative will significantly raise Ireland’s profile.”

Other sites that will turn green this weekend will include the Coit Tower and City Hall in San Francisco; Selfridges department store in London; the Municipal Stadium in Poznań (Poland), where Ireland will play two matches in this summer’s European Championships; the Cibeles fountain in Madrid; the entire town of Moraira on the Costa Blanca in Spain; the replica ‘Chrysler Building’ in the New York New York Hotel in Las Vegas; the Burgtheather (City Hall) in Vienna; the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw; Brussels Town Hall; the Glasgow Eye; and the Clyde Auditorium, known as ‘the Armadillo’ (SECC) in Glasgow.

“We are absolutely delighted that so many well-known sites and attractions are eager to come on board with us and join in our celebration next weekend,” said Niall Gibbons, chief executive of Tourism Ireland. “People everywhere instantly identify St Patrick’s Day with the island of Ireland and that heightened profile allows us to put the Ireland holiday experience in the spotlight around 17 March. Thesaturation coverage about Ireland this week – across the global airwaves, in newspapers and digital media – is an invaluable boost for our overall tourism marketing drive this year.”
