Spotify coming to Ireland soon?

Online music service Spotify is reportedly on its way to Ireland and Australia. It’s expected that the service’s arrival to these regions will be announced this week.

paidContent reports that Spotify has held talks with Irish ISPs about going to market with a bundled deal. The service already offers bundled deals with network Telia in Sweden.

However, Eircom’s consumer managing director Stephen Beynon has reportedly said the network is not making a deal with Spotify.

Spotify may announce its intentions to enter Ireland and Australia this week, which comes as good news to Irish music fans. It is also reportedly planning to raise another major round of funding, asking investors to value it at US$3.5bn.

The online music service was founded in 2006, launched in a few European locations and arrived in the US in 2011. It has proven to be quite popular, with 10m registered users, of which 3m are paying subscribers.

Spotify allows users to stream music from its database on demand. It currently has 15m songs hosted on the service. Users can either choose a free service which has advertising or they can pay for a subscription which also includes mobile access.

Up to 500 new Irish jobs to be created in the coming years

Good news on the job front today as three firms, backed by the Industrial Development Authority of Ireland (IDA), have announced the creation of up to 500 jobs across the country over the next few years.

The Irish Times reports that the new jobs will be located in Cork, Kildare, Galway and Sligo. The giant US technology company HP will create 150 software research and development vacancies over the next three years at its sites in Kildare and Galway, as well as hiring an additional 130 technical support staff in Kildare.

Abbott Pharmaceutical is planning to invest a massive €85million in its manufacturing facilities in Sligo. The proposed new plant for the company will be complete in 2014 and will provide 175 new jobs. 150 temporary building jobs will also be on offer during the construction phase.

Finally in Cork, Big Fish Games, an online games company, will create 30 jobs with the expansion of their research and development centre.

Barry O’Leary, the IDA Ireland chief executive described today as “an excellent day.” Speaking from New York, where he is attending the Invest in Ireland event hosted by Bill Clinton, he said that the announcements would highlight the “many advantages of investing in Ireland” to bigwig US business leaders.

“Foreign direct investment is a very competitive space at the moment,” said Mr Murphy.

“We are competing with a lot of other countries to win jobs,” he added.

Hopefully Enda will do his thing and come home with lots of new investors for the country.
