Retail Sector Could Create 40k Jobs by 2020 – Ibec Report

The Irish retail sector could create up to 40,000 new jobs by 2020 if it can be put on a sustainable path to recovery, according to Ibec group Retail Ireland, which has published its ‘Strategy for Retail 2014-2016’.

Retail sales figures up to now have been disappointing and many retailers continue to struggle, but Retail Ireland is optimistic about Christmas sales.

“Consumer sentiment is at a five-year high and there are 58,000 new jobs in the economy,” said Retail Ireland director Stephen Lynam.

“This should translate into higher spending this Christmas. Together with the fantastic value available in Irish stores right now, we are hopeful that tills will be ringing in the coming weeks.

Key findings set out in the strategy include that retail is the largest employer in the country, employing over 275,000 people and 75pc of retail jobs are located outside Dublin.

Retail generates over €5bn in taxes every year and pays over €8bn in wages; 90pc of retail businesses are Irish-owned and 77pc are family owned.
If retail sales can start to grow by 3-4pc per annum from 2016, the sector can create 40,000 new jobs, the report predicts.

Jobs Push Consumer Confidence to Six-Year High

CONSUMER confidence has hit a six-year high, prompting hopes that financial hardships for households could be nearing an end.

Consumer sentiment is at its highest level since the downturn became evident.

Figures show the KBC Bank Ireland/ESRI Consumer Sentiment Index rose to 73.1 in September from 66.8 in August, bringing the index to its highest level since September 2007.

Consumers have been buoyed by improving property values and ongoing announcements of new jobs being announced.

Positive views on the economic outlook are now crowding out negative views for first time since 2006, according to KBC Bank and the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI).

However, Austin Hughes of KBC Bank warned that the improvement did not seem to reflect any dramatic change in the economic environment in the past month.

He said the surge in confidence levels reflected an element of ‘catch-up’ in sentiment.

“Our best guess is that recent positive news on jobs and property prices have encouraged a view that Irish economic prospects are now beginning to improve.

Fuel and convenience retailer Topaz is to create 100 new jobs in Carlow and Laois as part of an €8 million investment in new motorway service stations.

The new service stations will be located at junction 3 on the Dublin-Cork motorway (M8) near Ballacolla, Co Laois and at junction 5 on the Dublin-Waterford motorway (M9) in Co Carlow.

Work on the 600 square metre site in Co Laois will begin in January and is expected to be completed by July 2014.

A planning application has been submitted for the Carlow site and construction there is expected to start next summer.

Some 200 people will be employed during the construction phase of both sites, while 100 full time jobs would be created once the sites are operational, Topaz said.

“We have an excellent motorway network in Ireland now but there is a shortage of service areas and we want to address that. We see both these sites as being a vital rest and refueling stops for motorists travelling between Dublin and Cork and Dublin and Waterford,” Paul Candon of Topaz said.
